NARRATIVE
The story was already yours. She just gave it a melody.
In 2020, Jah9 had just completed an East African press tour when the pandemic closed borders. What was meant to be a brief stop in Tanzania became three years.
She immersed herself in an unfamiliar landscape, explored her inner world more deliberately than she ever had, and welcomed her first child.
The Open Heart Project is the clearest expression of that period.

THE SOUND
Each original track is paired with a reinterpretation by Lisbon-based producer Shaka Lion of the Soulection collective. The remixes draw from the lineage of reggae sound system culture, sampling Hugh Mundell and Wayne Jarrett.
Sound system icon Rorystonelove appears as MC, a full-circle moment: he also produced Jah9’s debut album New Name.
The project arrives three ways: through lyrics that name what you lived, dub and instrumental moods your body already knows, and a visual arc built around characters you recognise from your own life.
